Peri is on her way to a dinner party in Istanbul when her handbag is snatched by a beggar. As she tries to get it back, a photograph falls out--an old Polaroid of three young women and their university professor, a reminder of a past and a love she has tried to forget. Peri is a Turkish woman who is conflicted about her religious beliefs because her parents have different views on faith. The story is set in modern-day Istanbul, and follows Peri as she attends a party and reflects on her past while terrorist attacks occur in the city. While studying at Oxford University, she attends a lecture on God given by a charismatic but controversial professor named Azur, and have debates about Islam and feminism with her friends, Shirin, an Iranian girl, and Mona, a devout Egyptian American.
